Preamps – Where the Signal Begins
Microphone preamps are among the most important building blocks of any recording chain. They do more than simply provide the gain required for microphones and instruments— they often shape the character of a production from the very beginning. Gain, control, and sonic character are at the heart of their role.
Whether transparent, highly detailed, or intentionally colored, a high-quality preamp plays a significant role in how vocals, instruments, and acoustic spaces are captured and ultimately perceived.
The question is rarely which preamp is objectively “the best.” What matters is which circuit design, character, and workflow best suit the source, microphone, and desired result.
Every recording process begins with a signal that must first be amplified. It is at this stage that the amount of detail, depth, and dynamic information available later in the production is often determined.
Modern microphone preamps take very different approaches to this task. Some are designed to remain as neutral and transparent as possible, while others intentionally introduce saturation, density, or harmonic coloration into the signal.
Particularly with vocals, acoustic instruments, drums, and high-end microphones, it quickly becomes apparent how much influence a preamp can have on the final recording. The goal is not necessarily more sound, but often better decisions made right at the recording stage.
In practice, technical specifications tell only part of the story. What matters is how a preamp interacts with the microphone, source, converter, and the rest of the signal chain.
That is why you will not find a random collection of preamps at Peakhouse Audio. Our selection is based on hands-on studio experience, direct comparisons, and equipment that has proven itself in professional recording, broadcast, and mastering environments.
If you are unsure which microphone preamp best suits your setup, we are happy to help with equipment selection, integration, and signal-flow planning.
Less focus on specifications—and more focus on preamps that enable the right decisions from the very beginning.

API 312
API 312 Mic Pre The API 312 Mic Pre is a legendary discrete microphone preamplifier in the 500-series format, based on the original design created by Saul Walker in the early 1970s. The 312 became one of the first API mic preamps and formed the foundation for many of the company’s console designs and later rack units. The circuit combines API’s famous 2520 discrete op-amp with a proprietary AP2516 input transformer and transformer-balanced output stage. This architecture produces the unmistakable API sound characterized by high headroom, fast transient response and powerful midrange punch. With up to 69 dB of gain, the 312 can drive everything from dynamic microphones to low-output ribbon microphones. Features such as a 20 dB pad, phantom power, polarity switch and transformer output tap selection make it highly versatile in modern recording environments. Sound Character The API 312 delivers a fast, punchy and forward-sounding tone that has become a staple of countless professional recordings. Its discrete circuitry and transformer design provide excellent transient response, strong midrange presence and tight low-frequency control.
