Patchbays – Bringing Order to Complex Signal Paths
Patchbays are among the least visible yet most important components of a professional studio. They do not change the sound, frequency response, or dynamics of a signal—and yet they can have a significant impact on how efficiently a studio operates on a daily basis. Organization, flexibility, and control are at the heart of their purpose.
Whether for recording, mixing, mastering, or broadcast applications, a well-designed patchbay simplifies routing tasks, reduces the need for constant cable swapping, and makes complex signal paths quickly and reliably accessible.
The question is rarely which patchbay is objectively “the best.” What matters is which solution best fits the studio's signal flow, hardware infrastructure, and workflow requirements.
As the number of converters, preamps, compressors, equalizers, effects processors, and monitoring components grows, so does the complexity of a studio. This is precisely where patchbays become a critical part of the infrastructure.
They allow signal paths to be reconfigured with ease, equipment to be interconnected efficiently, and routing changes to be made within seconds—without constantly reaching behind racks or hardware units.
At the same time, patchbays differ considerably in connector formats, normalling configurations, channel counts, and integration options. The ideal solution always depends on the specific studio layout and the intended workflow.
In practice, the value of a patchbay is not determined by the number of connections it offers. What matters is whether it simplifies routing, reduces potential points of failure, and makes working with hardware more efficient on a day-to-day basis.
That is why you will not find a random collection of patchbays at Peakhouse Audio. Our selection is based on hands-on studio experience, real-world integration scenarios, and solutions that have proven themselves in professional recording, mixing, and mastering environments.
If you are unsure which patchbay best suits your setup, we are happy to help with equipment selection, signal-flow design, and system integration.
Less cable chaos—and more of a studio that remains flexible, organized, and under control at all times.

Cranborne Audio C.A.S.T Intro Bundle
Cranborne Audio C.A.S.T. Intro Bundle The Cranborne Audio C.A.S.T. Intro Bundle is a complete entry-level package for Cranborne's C.A.S.T. – Cat 5 Analogue Signal Transport system, providing a flexible way to distribute professional balanced analogue audio using standard shielded network cable. The bundle combines the central N8 Distribution Hub with an N22 breakout box, an N22H breakout box with reference-grade headphone amplifier, the appropriate 19" rackmount kit and two 10-metre Cat cables. It therefore provides everything required to establish a sophisticated audio infrastructure between control rooms, live rooms, vocal booths and remote recording positions without installing conventional analogue multicores. The concept is remarkably straightforward: a single C.A.S.T. cable can replace four balanced analogue audio cables. C.A.S.T. is not Audio-over-IP or a digital networking protocol. Audio remains entirely analogue, with no A/D or D/A conversion, no drivers, no software and no digital network latency. Shielded Cat 5e, Cat 6 and Cat 7 cables can be used over distances of up to 100 metres / 330 feet. At the heart of the package is the N8 C.A.S.T. Distribution Hub. Two Tascam-standard DB25 connections integrate eight inputs and eight outputs from an audio interface, mixing console or other studio equipment into the C.A.S.T. system. Four independent C.A.S.T. ports – A through D – each provide two send and two return paths. N22 and N22H units can then be positioned wherever analogue connectivity is required. Sound Character The C.A.S.T. Intro Bundle is intentionally designed not to impart a sonic signature. N8 and N22 are completely passive and contain no preamplification, conversion or DSP stages. Their purpose is simply to transport professional balanced analogue audio while dramatically simplifying studio cabling. C.A.S.T. makes use of the twisted conductor pairs found within shielded network cable. A single Cat cable carries four balanced analogue audio paths, effectively replacing four conventional XLR cable runs. Cranborne recommends high-performance Cat 6 or Cat 7 cable where optimum crosstalk performance is required. The system also fully supports 48 V phantom power, allowing condenser microphones and active DI boxes to operate from remote C.A.S.T. breakout points. The included N22H adds a high-performance active headphone amplifier to the passive C.A.S.T. infrastructure. This makes it possible, for example, to create a complete vocal booth connection with a single Cat cable: the microphone signal travels back to the control room while a stereo cue mix is simultaneously delivered to the performer. The headphone amplifier requires power, and the appropriate 9 V power supply is included. Intro Bundle is therefore an elegant solution for studios requiring a flexible analogue infrastructure. Rather than installing multiple XLR runs for every new recording position, a single Cat cable can simultaneously carry microphone, line and monitoring signals. For vocal booths, separate recording rooms and mobile sessions in particular, this creates a professional, tidy and easily expandable cabling system.
Cranborne Audio N22
Cranborne Audio N22 The Cranborne Audio N22 is a completely passive 4-channel Cat 5 audio snake and C.A.S.T. breakout box, designed to transport balanced analogue audio between live rooms, control rooms, stages and other studio locations using a single shielded Cat 5e, Cat 6 or Cat 7 cable. Instead of running multiple long XLR cables or a conventional analogue multicore, N22 can distribute up to four channels of analogue audio over distances of up to 100 metres / 330 feet. Importantly, this is not Audio-over-IP or a digital network connection. Cranborne's C.A.S.T. (Cat 5 Analogue Signal Transport) system simply repurposes the copper conductors inside shielded network cable to carry fully balanced analogue audio. There is no A/D or D/A conversion, no DSP, no latency and N22 requires no external power. N22 becomes particularly powerful when integrated with C.A.S.T.-enabled equipment including the Cranborne Audio 500R8, 500ADAT and Camden EC2. Alternatively, two N22 units can form a completely standalone passive Cat 5 analogue snake without requiring any other Cranborne equipment. Sound Character The N22 is intentionally sonically transparent. As a completely passive device with no amplifier, converter or DSP stages, its sole purpose is to transport analogue audio cleanly between locations. Cranborne optimises its C.A.S.T. connections for the electrical properties of shielded network cable. According to the manufacturer, balanced analogue audio can be transported over distances of up to 100 m / 330 ft with very low crosstalk and without significant high-frequency roll-off. High-performance Cat 6 and Cat 7 cabling can provide further improvements in crosstalk performance. Another important advantage is support for 48 V phantom power. C.A.S.T. does not generate phantom power itself, but it can pass phantom power from a connected microphone preamplifier or audio interface through the shielded Cat cable to the remote N22. Condenser microphones and active DI boxes can therefore be powered remotely just as they would through a conventional XLR connection. Highlights ✔ passive 4-channel audio distribution over a single Cat cable ✔ Cranborne C.A.S.T. – Cat 5 Analogue Signal Transport ✔ completely analogue signal transmission ✔ no A/D or D/A conversion ✔ no digital signal processing ✔ zero latency ✔ completely passive – no power supply required ✔ replaces up to four balanced XLR runs with one shielded Cat cable ✔ transmission distances up to 100 m / 330 ft ✔ compatible with shielded Cat 5e, Cat 6 and Cat 7 cable ✔ supports transmission of 48 V phantom power ✔ two analogue inputs and two analogue outputs at the remote location ✔ XLR and ¼" connectivity for flexible integration ✔ functions as a breakout box for Cranborne C.A.S.T. systems ✔ direct integration with 500R8 and 500ADAT ✔ integration with Camden EC2 ✔ compatible with N22H ✔ two N22 units create a standalone passive Cat 5 audio snake ✔ significantly reduces conventional studio cable infrastructure ✔ suitable for permanent and mobile recording systems Typical Applications ✔ control room to live room connectivity ✔ vocal booths ✔ drum rooms ✔ reverb chambers and remote spaces ✔ relocating microphone inputs ✔ relocating line-level I/O ✔ monitor and cue signal distribution ✔ 500R8 and 500ADAT integration ✔ Camden EC2 system expansion ✔ mobile recording systems ✔ live and stage applications ✔ replacing conventional analogue multicores ✔ temporary recording setups in large spaces ✔ remote microphone operation with 48 V phantom power Technical Specifications ✔ type: passive Cat 5 audio snake / C.A.S.T. breakout box ✔ signal format: balanced analogue audio ✔ audio channels via C.A.S.T.: 4 ✔ local configuration: 2 inputs / 2 outputs ✔ inputs: 2 × XLR/TRS combo ✔ outputs: 2 × XLR + 2 × ¼" jack ✔ C.A.S.T. Cranborne Audio N22H
Cranborne Audio N22H The Cranborne Audio N22H combines a high-performance reference-grade headphone amplifier with a passive 4-channel Cat 5 audio snake and C.A.S.T. breakout box. Designed to place premium headphone amplification and analogue audio connectivity exactly where it is required, N22H is equally at home beside a musician in the live room, inside a vocal booth or as part of a mobile recording system. Cranborne's C.A.S.T. (Cat 5 Analogue Signal Transport) technology carries up to four channels of balanced analogue audio over a single shielded Cat 5e, Cat 6 or Cat 7 cable. This is not Audio-over-IP: the signals remain completely analogue, with no A/D or D/A conversion and no digital latency. Cable runs of up to 100 metres / 330 feet are supported. Unlike the passive N22, the N22H incorporates a powerful headphone amplifier based on the custom design used in Cranborne's 500R8. Delivering up to 950 mW per channel into 100 ohms, with switchable power modes and exceptionally wide bandwidth, it can accommodate everything from sensitive in-ear monitors to demanding professional studio headphones. Sound Character The N22H headphone amplifier is designed for transparency, high dynamic range and exceptionally low distortion. In High Power mode its −1 dB frequency response extends from below 0.8 Hz to beyond 250 kHz, while THD+N is specified below 0.0009% at +6 dBu into a high-impedance measurement load. This level of performance makes N22H suitable not only for artist monitoring during tracking, but also for critical listening, mixing and mastering. Two operating modes optimise performance for different headphones. High Power maximises headroom and output capability for high-impedance and open-back studio headphones. Low Power optimises level range, power consumption and battery life for low-impedance headphones and sensitive in-ear monitors. N22H can also operate as a completely standalone headphone amplifier. Simply connect the line outputs of an audio interface, mixer, synthesizer, pedalboard or outboard device directly to its two inputs and select Inputs as the headphone source. This makes N22H useful even without any other C.A.S.T.-enabled equipment. Cranborne Audio N8
Cranborne Audio N8 The Cranborne Audio N8 is a completely passive C.A.S.T. Distribution Hub designed to distribute up to eight analogue inputs and eight analogue outputs from an audio interface, mixing console or studio system using standard shielded Cat 5e, Cat 6 or Cat 7 cables. Four independent C.A.S.T. ports can connect N22 and N22H breakout boxes, Camden EC preamps and other C.A.S.T.-enabled devices throughout a studio over distances of up to 100 metres / 330 feet. Crucially, C.A.S.T. is not a digital Audio-over-IP system. Audio remains fully analogue and balanced throughout the signal path. N8 requires no A/D or D/A conversion, network switches, drivers, software or external power. Each Cat cable carries four analogue audio paths, effectively replacing a conventional four-channel XLR multicore. At the heart of N8 are two Tascam-standard DB25 connectors, allowing direct connection to eight inputs and eight outputs of an audio interface or other professional equipment. These signals are distributed across four independent C.A.S.T. ports, each providing two audio paths in each direction. In total, N8 provides 16 analogue signal paths – 8 inputs and 8 outputs – across four Cat cables. Sound Character The N8 is intentionally sonically transparent. Its completely passive design contains no preamplification, conversion or DSP stages. Its sole purpose is to transport high-quality balanced analogue signals between different areas of a studio or stage environment. Cranborne's C.A.S.T. – Cat 5 Analogue Signal Transport technology uses the twisted pairs within shielded network cable as analogue audio paths. As a single Cat cable can transport four channels of fully balanced analogue audio, conventional multicore installations can be dramatically simplified. Cranborne specifies cable runs of up to 100 m / 330 ft, with high-performance Cat 6 and Cat 7 cables recommended for improved crosstalk performance. The system also supports transmission of 48 V phantom power. A condenser microphone can therefore be connected to an N22 in the live room while receiving phantom power from a microphone preamp or interface located in the control room. RME DTOX-16 I/O
RME DTOX-16 I/O The RME DTOX-16 I/O is a professional passive 19-inch analogue breakout panel designed to convert multichannel 25-pin D-Sub connections into convenient XLR connectivity. The I/O version provides eight XLR inputs and eight XLR outputs, connected to two separate 25-pin D-Sub connectors using the Tascam pinout. It is an elegant solution for recording studios, broadcast installations and professional racks where multichannel converters or audio interfaces need to be permanently and conveniently presented on XLR connectors. Instead of relying on loose D-Sub-to-XLR breakout looms, DTOX-16 I/O provides a rugged rack-mounted connection point. Eight female XLR connectors accommodate incoming signals, while eight male XLR connectors provide the outputs. On the D-Sub side, the eight input and eight output channels are carried by their own dedicated 25-pin connectors. DTOX-16 I/O is not restricted to RME hardware. It can be used with professional equipment featuring appropriately wired analogue D-Sub I/O following the relevant Tascam/RME pinout. RME specifically lists products including the ADI-8 QS, ADI-8 DS Mk III, M-32 AD/DA, M-16 AD/DA and M-32 Pro series among the compatible devices. Sound Character As a purely passive breakout solution, the DTOX-16 I/O has no sound character of its own. There are no microphone preamps, converters, active amplifier stages or DSP processing inside the unit. Its purpose is simply to provide a reliable physical connection between balanced analogue D-Sub and XLR formats. This straightforward architecture is particularly desirable in professional installations: audio performance remains determined by the connected converter, interface, preamp or outboard equipment, while DTOX-16 I/O provides an organised and mechanically robust connection point. RME uses Neutrik XLR connectors, making the panel particularly well suited to professional environments where connections may be changed regularly and mechanical reliability is essential.
